September is gearing up, which means that it’s back to school time
for families across the nation and school buses will once again be a common
sight for motorists in New York. We all want our children to be safe when
they are out in the world and following bus safety regulations can be
essential to this end. However, not all drivers may be aware that many
of the instructions given by a bus driver are not suggestions, they are
the law. For example, when a Bus’s lights flash red, a driver
must stop. In cases where there is no median or divider, lanes of opposing
traffic must also stop. Below our blog outlines tips and advice to help
keep children and adults safe during the school year.
School bus safety tips for motorists include:
Reduce speed when a school bus flashes yellow lights or you are in a school zone, even
if there are no children visible from where you are. The truth is you
never know when a child will be just around the corner.
Come to a complete stop when bus lights flash red or raise a stop sign. This is the bus driver’s
indication that children are either exiting or boarding the vehicle. Drivers
must stop and provide at least 20 feet of clearance.
Watch for children while driving in a neighborhood or area where a school is located. Many
children may congregate before and after school and will not always have
issues of safety at the forefront of their mind.
Be aware of the time that the schools in your area, or on your commute, are scheduled to start
and to release for the day. Children who are running late or are excited
to get home may dart out across the street, increasing the danger of an accident.
Drivers who do not follow these laws can face serious consequences. In
New York, administrative penalties resulting from the failure to stop
for a school bus in the process of offloading or boarding children can
include fines of $250 or more. Drivers with multiple infractions in a
short period of time can be facing fines of $1000. Worse, if an injury
occurs due to an inattentive driver, a child their family may be left
to pay the price.
