Trampoline parks are a relatively new phenomenon and it may come as no
surprise that the rate of injuries has increased alongside the growing
industry. According to a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics,
injuries at trampoline parks have risen more than tenfold between 2010
and 2014, while the rate of home injuries has stayed relatively consistent.
The study goes on to detail the types of injuries which are occurring,
the majority of which are leg fractures. Trampoline injuries are nothing
new and associations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have consistently
discouraged their recreational use. If the popularity of these parks continues
to grow, more injuries are likely to follow.
Trampoline parks usually feature wall-to-wall trampolines which are generally
more powerful than those commonly used at home. This can allow users to
jump higher and farther than they may be used to or that may be safe for
their situation. Additionally, and with the increasing popularity of these
parks, there may be many using the trampolines at any given time. Even
with the supervision or parents and park staff, the combination of these
factors can ultimately lead to injuries.
In a statement responding to the results of this study, the International
Association of Trampoline Parks (IATP) admits that an increase in the
total number of injuries is an expected result of the national increase
in trampoline parks. However, that injuries are “expected”
to occur does not excuse the creation of an unsafe environment for children.
Despite their relatively recent expansion, trampoline parks still have
a duty of care to the public to provide a hazard free environment. When
circumstances such as the lack of supervision, lack of protective measures,
or improper equipment maintenance lead to an injury, these parks must
be held accountable.
