Per a federal settlement agreement, Mid Hudson Medical group is to pay
the federal government $5 million. The settlement agreement is neither
an admission of fault or guilt.
Panos, a former orthopedic surgeon, is accused of coordinating an insurance
fraud scheme that resulted in $35 million in claims and would payout millions
of dollars to his employer and himself. He also has over 260 medical malpractice
cases pending against him. According to the accusations Panos did not
keep accurate medical records, submitted bills that he was not entitled
to and failed to render appropriate care. Accusations also suggest that
he would perform unnecessary surgeries, botch surgeries and fake surgeries,
causing his patients to suffer their ailments for a longer period of time.
Panos has since forfeited his medical license and pled guilty on October,
31 2013 to one count of felony health care fraud. He faces up to nine
years in prison and is potentially liable to pay back millions of dollars.
