What was supposed to be a fun and sunny Sunday afternoon at the Norwalk
Oyster Festival turned out to be a day of horrors when a festival ride
called the Zumur malfunctioned.
The Zumur is a portable amusement ride that spins riders around in an eliptical
motion in swings that are teathered to metal arms. While the ride was
inspected two days prior to the accident it, for some reason, came to
a jerking stop while the riders were mid-flight. The stop caused the riders
to slam into eachother and the base of the ride.
Eighteen people were injured because of the accident. Unfortunately most
of them were children. Twelve children and one adult were taken to the
hospital for treatment.
All of the rides at the festival were shutdown temporarily until they were
inspected by the ride company and fire investigators. They were reopened
later that evening after passing the inspections.
