We see it every day; a driver of a car, for whatever reason, turns left
in front of oncoming traffic when the circumstances make such improper.
All motorists are taught to look out for oncoming traffic when attempting
a left hand turn and it is simply a part of a motorist’s duty of
care to other roadway users. But drivers are negligent sometimes. They
either do not look for oncoming traffic or they just do not care enough
to wait for traffic to pass before making a left hand turn.
Experienced Poughkeepsie motorcycle accident attorneys have seen the devastation that occurs when motorists negligently turn
left in front of an oncoming biker. If the biker sees the accident coming,
he/she may not have enough time to slow down or maneuver around the car.
It is common for some riders to “ditch” the bike or to “lay
In these cases, a collision with the vehicle may be avoided, but the rider
will still be injured. The rider will certainly suffer from road rash,
but he/she may also end up with cuts, bruising, fractures, head trauma,
and even death. Why can the injuries be so severe? This is because the
rider may slide into the vehicle or into other objects on and around the road.
But if a collision does occur, the biker will be ejected from the motorcycle.
This is not a position that will end well. Riders in these instances have
a high likelihood of being killed in the accident. If the rider survives,
there will be multiple serious injuries.
What types of injuries should one expect to see the motorcyclist endure?
Bone fractures to the hands, arms, shoulders, legs, and various joints.
Skull fractures may occur, especially if the rider was not wearing a helmet.
Concussions occur as well. Traumatic brain injury is another common injury.
Many of these injuries will take months to recover from. The
injured biker may need multiple surgeries to repair his/her body and extensive physical
rehabilitation will be required. So this means that months and even years
may pass before the rider is completely healed.
Unfortunately, some injuries will never let the victim fully recover. Traumatic
brain injuries can lead to permanent loss of cognitive functioning and
loss to sensory perception. Injuries to the neck and spine can lead to
permanent paralysis. In short, the rider’s life will never be the same.
Since left hand turns are the most prevalent cause of
motorcycle collisions, riders should be aware of the danger and they should always ride safe.
Pay attention to see if the car driver is attempting to turn left. Wear
a helmet. And obey the speed limit.
