On Saturday afternoon in Taghkanic, six people were injured when an SUV
crashed into an overturned tractor trailer that was carrying milk.
According to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office news release, the tractor
trailer, a 2013 Peterbuilt driven by Brian J. Gelinas, 49, of Red Hook,
was southbound on Route 10 just south of Strohmeir Lane when he failed
to negotiate a slippery hill. The vehicle then slid backward, jackknifed
and overturned, blocking the road and adding to the slippery conditions
by leaking an unknown amount of milk from the trailer onto the road.
Apparently, as Gelinas was calling 911 for help, a northbound 2000 Chevy
Tahoe, driven by Renea Fontanez, 48, of Cambridge, MA, could not stop
and crashed head on into the overturned tractor trailer.
Fontanez and four of her five passengers were injured in the crash.
Fontanez complained of back, neck facial and knee pain. Also injured were
Donna Ferreira, 44, with knee pain, Renai Ferreria, 42, with neck, rib
and face pain, Darlene Monette, 45, with leg and shoulder pain and Denise
Ferreria, 46, complained of foot, leg, shoulder and face pain. However,
all of them refused transport to the hospital.
Gelinas and the fifth passenger in Fontanez's vehicle were uninjured.
