Everyone in New York City knows what a yellow taxi is. In fact, over thirteen
thousand medallions have been issued that give cabbies the right to operate
a yellow cab. These specific taxis fulfill almost a half million trips
every day which translates to roughly 175 million annually. Some recent
years have seen over 240 million people use taxi services. When other
types of livery vehicles are added in, over fifty thousand for hire vehicles
operate in the Big Apple.
Experienced New York City attorneys have seen taxi accidents first hand and personally litigate taxi car accidents
for injured victims. The last decade of the twentieth century alone saw
over four thousand taxi accidents in New York City. Keep in mind that
this number only includes reported accidents and you can be assured that
many more accidents occurred that went unreported.
A more troubling number is the percentage of injury and deaths that occur
in taxi cab accidents. Around seventy five percent of taxi cab accidents
include an injured or killed victim. The holiday season should be fun,
but unfortunately many taxi accidents will happen during the silly season.
The driver, Taxi Company, and or the motorists driving the other vehicles
involved in the collision can all be held accountable if their negligent
act contributed to the victim’s injury.
Why are so many passengers injured in
taxi cab accidents? First, over eighty percent of all taxi cab passengers fail to wear a
seat belt. We all know that seat belts save lives and reduce the likelihood
of injury. When you are in a cab, please buckle up. Second, the partition
between the front and back seats is very hard. Any impact with the partition
will result in an injury; even a low impact collision is harmful. Lastly,
many livery vehicles are older and do not come equipped with side impact
airbags, making side impact taxi collisions even more devastating.
The types of injury that occur in holiday season taxi accidents are akin
vehicle accident injuries. But as you know from the statistics above, there will be a high amount
of injury. This means that there will be more occurrences of cuts, bruising,
fractures, concussions, skull fractures, burns, and damaged organs.
If you or a loved one is involved in a
taxi cab accident, please take measures to protect your rights. Get the cabbies name and
the taxi registration number. Also make sure to get the contact number
for the taxi cab company. Get insurance information too. Take notes on
the accident and talk to witnesses. Of course, see a physician right away
to have your injuries assessed.
