Any bone that can break may indeed end up breaking if someone is involved in a
slip and fall accident. This is simply because we humans are more fragile than we would like
to admit. Perhaps feelings of invincibility are due to age and inexperience,
from watching TV actors survive inordinately high falls, or because humans
have done so many great things in terms of science, engineering, medicine,
and social organization.
But whatever the case may be,
experienced Poughkeepsie slip and fall attorneys know that falls can easily fracture bones. These fractures can be slight,
but often times the injuries become serious. They can become so serious
that the slip and fall victim will need months or years to fully recover.
With that said, many slip and fall victims will never recover at all;
be it because the victim has died or because the injury turns out to be
To be clear, all fractures are serious since the victim will face impaired
living while the fracture heals. Therefore, even hairline fractures are
a significant event for a
slip and fall victim. But fractures come in many varieties.
A standard bone fracture involves a bone that is completely broken, but
the victim does not have an open wound attributable to the fracture. This
type of fracture can be complete or incomplete in that some of the bones
at the fracture site are still attached. Simple fractures will be very
painful and will result in being unable to use the part of the body that
is fractured. Healing will require completely immobilizing the fractured
bone. After the bone has healed and the casting is removed, the victim
may have lost muscle mass and will have to undergo physical rehabilitation
to restore normal functioning.
Bone fractures become very significant when the break is combined with
an open wound at the break site, the injury is called a compound fracture.
This means that the bone has become completely broken and part of the
bone has driven through muscle, veins, ligaments, and even through the
Compound fractures are devastating. First and foremost, the pain is intense
and unimaginable to anyone who has not been injured in such a fashion.
Obviously there will be bleeding too and the limb will not be movable.
The bone itself must be repaired, which will involve the use of pins,
screws, plates, and even metal rods. Multiple surgeries may be needed
to fully repair the bone.
I am sure you realize that veins, muscle tissue, nerves, and ligaments
will need repair as well. The process to complete recovery can take years.
Some of these
slip and fall victims will never fully recover.
