During an interview on Monday, a Dutchess County Jail official said that
the suicide death of an inmate is under investigation.
According to Jail Administrator George Krom, Kaseem Pankey, 24, of the
city of Poughkeepsie, was in jail facing a felony grand larceny charge
when he hung himself in his cell the day before Thanksgiving. Pankey died
of asphyxiation by hanging, said Krom.
Apparently this was Pankey's third time in jail and he was never on
suicide watch. The administrator admitted that Pankey had known mental
heath issues, but showed low signs of suicide while incarcerated.
Pankey had been placed in a special housing unit with fewer cells because
of his mental health issues, but was not considered a threat to himself.
Mainetti, Mainetti & O'Connor would like to express our sympathies
to the friends and family of Mr. Pankey.
